With Nick Vane

Suitable For: All

Class Size: 4

We are delighted to bring you this Basket weaving workshop with Nick Vane.

Nick is a basket maker with fifteen years experience of teaching groups both in supported-living and recreational pop-up workshop settings.

This adult workshop will provide beginners with the knowledge and skills they need for making a simple round basket with a handle out of natural willow. We'll be following traditional methods which will include an introduction to the materials, tools, techniques and safety aspects so that basketry can become the beginning of a new hobby.

The group will be small so that one to one tuition can be given as necessary and all the tools etc will be available for use. Please wear old clothes or bring an apron as the willow needs to be worked wet.

During this workshop you will learn:

  • How to select and prepare willow

  • Safe use of basketry tools

  • How to make a round basket including
    Pairing the base
    Staking up the sides
    A variety of basic weaves
    How to finish a border
    How to add a handle

  • Basketry jargon

  • Basketry suppliers

What's included:

  • Willow and all materials needed to make your basket

  • Tools and equipment needed

  • Teas, coffee & freshly baked cakes

"Thank you for such a great day on Sunday with Nick basket weaving. It was a lovely group of ladies, we had such fun together, and we were all really pleased with our efforts thanks to Nick's relentless patience and extensive knowledge.

I would love to have another go in the future"
