With: Kate Hasted
Suitable for: All
Class Size: 8
Join Kate for a fun workshop to explore Suminagashi Marbling!
Suminagashi is the Japanese technique of floating inks onto water that are delicately styled
to create a pattern and printed onto paper or fabric. The technique dates back to the 12 th
century and was originally used to decorate calligraphy papers.
The session will start with a brief overview of the history of Suminagashi, followed by a
demonstration of the technique, using water-based inks and brushes. You will then
have time to practise the techniques and create your own marbled papers, working with plain
and coloured backgrounds. No print is the same and is sure to delight!
Following a short break Kate will demonstrate the use of oil-based inks with time to explore
using this medium and compare.
To end the session Kate will share some ideas for how to use your papers and each
particpant will take a small frame home to display a marbled piece to treasure.
Suitable for beginners or those looking for a refresh of the technique
